We define a passive house as one that minimises the energy input to maintain a comfortable temperature.
Many specifications claiming to be passive housing include items that do not reduce the pollution involved in the construction or occupancy.

Such wasteful items include dead grass roofs and lockers for building workers.
We design for the minimum energy use to maintain a uniform temperature in the house. We also design for the minimum carbon footprint of the construction.

Our high level of insulation can mean that for instance in a cold climate the occupants and electrical devices may provide sufficient heat input to offset losses through the dwelling fabric.

The cost of this insulation can be recovered in a few years due to the savings in energy costs.

The insulation design involves not only using the most economical type of insulation material but using systems that will continue to perform over the life of the structure.

Other components of the total insulation solution from Affordable Price Housing include providing an impermeable structure and preventing cold bridging and condensation.

Our houses can often maintain a constant temperature with simple ventilation and minimal heat pump heating or cooling.

We recomend the use of solar hot water heating as this can provide a return on investment in a very short time.
We do not include solar cells on the roof as part of our passive house design.

- For every kilowatt of solar power on the roof there has to be an equal amount of kilowatts in a coal or gas power station to provide the energy required when the sun is not shining.

- Such "renewables" do not replace the reduced energy useage resulting from adequate insulation of the dwelling.

- Similarly the carbon saved over the limited life of batteries is less than the original carbon released during the manufacture of the batteries, so batteries actually increase polution.

- So called "thermal mass" is not part of a passive house design, simply because a constant temperature is maintained in the house, which means that there is no temperature difference to transfer heat from a "thermal mass" to the air in the structure.
- Ensure that any claims to passive house design can justify each aspect claimed.
